On every Opel car, the Vin number or Vehicle Identification Number is located on a sticker on the driver's door post. The VIN is usually 17 digits long and consists of 3 groups of numbers (3x5=15 characters). The first group (1x5=5 characters) is composed of: 1) the country code: ‘D’ for Germany; 2) Opel Group; 3) plant number; 4) product code. The second group (2x5=10 characters): 5) model year; 6-8) production sequence number. The third group consists of the production sequence number in human readable format, being 1x5=5 characters. The code is separated into 3 blocks, with each block containing a different letter, followed by an 'X' or an 'O'. The first block is the Vin Block, consisting of 10 characters. The second block is the Serial Block, consisting of 6 characters ('S1...S6'). The Third block is the Date Block, consisting of 2 characters ('D' or 'T'). Finally there are two checksums which are not important but assist in validating the data. Note that the date is coded in German format, so December is coded as '18', not the month January. Several decoding websites exist on the Internet. These websites usually receive an image of a VIN, which is then decoded under various assumptions of Opel cars that have been in production in the past five decades. For an Opel VIN decoder to be reliable, it must decode for ALL known Opel cars with 100% accuracy. This is difficult because technology changes fast but Opel cars are old and many of them are still being used around the world. Therefore it is possible to be safe in assuming that an Opel VIN has always been the same since at least 1983. The Cracking International Number (CIN) of an Opel car can reliably be determined by cross-referencing the VIN with CID databases, which are national vehicle data bases. The CID database contains information of all European, Asian and African Opel cars since the year 2000. In addition to this, a good website can easily determine if a VIN-number has been used in a different model/series/engine system from the one specified by the Vehicle Identification number. Please note that not all databases are 100% complete for any given year. Also note that the information given is not necessarily 100% correct, as evidenced by the vast amount of differing information on the Internet. The Opel VIN decoder should be used as a tool to assist in validating data rather than as a definitive source of data.
